How My Illness Has Helped Me

My Illness has helped my family and me in many ways. I know this may sound odd and it has taken me many years to realize. Firstly, the diagnosis of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) allowed for clarity and validation of what I was suffering from. More importantly, it has allowed me to appreciate the little things in life, such as going for a fast scooter ride and feeling the wind blowing in my hair. My illness has taught me to be grateful, be present, and not allow hEDS to define me. I will never let hEDS take over my life again. I am now in control and making a path for my family and I to thrive in. I always believed I was negatively impacting my children. However, having a chronic condition has allowed my kids to take on more responsibility, be creative, build confidence, and most importantly learn the skill of empathy. They know that being loved and valued is what is important in life. My children have learned to slow down, laugh, smile, and have fun. Yes, we are going to miss out on numerous activities and events because of my health, and some days that will be easier to accept than others. Other times, my family will have to leave me behind, and that is ok too. It is ok because I have learned new ways to have a sense of purpose and enjoyment. hEDS has taught me how to be creative both mentally and physically. Imagery has been a mindfulness technique that has been powerful to my health. I used to be saddened by this tool, however, now I smile when I envision myself running through trails, or hitting a tennis ball with incredible topspin. I will keep doing my best to adapt to this illness and be a positive role model to my 3 amazing children.
